What sends a shudder down the spine of some people has become the focus of Dr. Bass’s life. He’s taken up the trail of death, in the service of science, the truth and the police.

The first thing the police have to do when a body is found is determine the time of death. But it is only within the last 30 years that attempts have been made to gain more detailed insights into the process of decay.

The obvious repercussion for Dr. Bass’s investigations was at once simple and ingenious: the systematic observation of corpses. How long does it take a dead body to decay under water, and how long in a closed car in the sultry heat of a Tennessee summer?
