The History of South Africa

More than 500 years ago, the first Europeans set foot on the southernmost tip of Africa. They found a Garden of Eden and named it the Cape of Good Hope. They build their cottages amongst lions and rhinos, separating themselves from the native peoples with an almond hedge. Over the centuries, the hedge became a wooden fence and the fence a concrete wall.

This three-part documentary shows how, with an ever-growing racial tension, a country emerged from colonialism, how freedom was finally achieved with the ending of Apartheid, and what the new South Africa looks like today, as its wounds continue to heal.
